I have two ancestors who were in Brick's 49th the Green Tigers. Dixie Ellis was responsible for turning back the US cavalry charge at Cryslers Farm. His elder brothr Hercules was responsible for refitting Fort St Joseph on Lake Huron for he 49th. he was recalled in 1809 but drowned on the way back to Ireland. Brock adopted his natural son. another cousin of theirs Hercules Ellis probably fought with the 88th Connaught Rangers at Plattsburgh, as did Dixie.

I have also been in touch with Robert Sewell a Toronto prof descended from Lt John Sewell of the 49th who left a record of Crysler;s Farm http://www.robertsewell.ca/johnstalban.html

Contemporary miniature paintings of Hercules Ellis and John Sewell exist in the possession of both families

Thank you, Simon.

That is a fascinating family history you have! We hope you’ll be out to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Crysler’s Farm next year.

Did you do most of the research yourself or had it been in family records? It might make for an interesting blog post, especially if you pursued most of the info on your own.
