 t Gallery\nWhile the War of 1812 unfolded, what books were people in K
 ingston reading? What landscapes were they painting? What beautiful th
 ings graced their homes? What types of art were popular abroad?\nIn th
 e aftermath of the War of 1812, the officers of the Royal Navy in King
 ston presented local businessman John Kirby with a stunning silver cup
  acknowledging \"their esteem and regard and lasting sense of his dist
 inguished hospitality.\" To mark the War’s Bicentennial, this exhibi
 tion contemplates what cultural life might have been like in the burge
 oning garrison town. Kingston was the most important urban centre of U
 pper Canada on Lake Ontario and its citizens aspired to the finer thin
 gs in life. The influx of soldiers and the growth of business produced
  fresh opportunity for aesthetic and leisure activities that reflected
  and built upon British traditions and trends. The War of 1812, though
  momentous, was part of a larger cultural and social history. Art, Ele
 gance and Hospitality brings together silver, fashion, literature and 
 art, to provide a glimpse of the cultural context of the 1810s as King
 stonians might have experienced it.\nThis exhibition highlights works 
 from private and public collections in Kingston, including the Art Cen
 tre, RMC Museum, and the W. D. Jordan Special Collections Library, Que
 en’s University. Research assistance has been provided by Adam Belov
 ari, as an Art Centre Practicum student and volunteer.\nJoin us for a
